Less than a month ago, one of the people I follow posted something that amounted to “please don’t judge me before knowing me”. Unfortunately for them, they posted that they were an MRA. It got 6,000 notes in less than a day, most of them mocking. Their inbox was flooded. They had to change urls. Needless to say, it was horrible.
Political ideology and what rights groups you affiliate with tells you nothing about a person. If a person says that they are an MRA, all you know is that they are part of the Men’s Human Rights Movement, You know nothing about the rest of them. You do not know what they look like, if they are currently seeing someone, what their favorite movie is, anything. You do not even know if they are gay or straight, a man or a woman, white or non-white, cis or transsexual. All you know is that they care abut men’s rights.
Do not attack people over political ideology. It does not make you a better person. It does not give you the upper hand. It shows that you are, in fact, a very small person who is unwilling to accept dissenting opinions. Despite my utter distaste for feminism, I do not judge people who choose to call themselves feminists negatively. All I ask is that the same courtesy is extended for MRAs. You are not proving your movements superiority when you mock MRAs, or when MRAs mock feminists. You are only proving that you cannot debate and cannot punch holes in ideas rather than people.
When a person says “Please get to know me before you pass judgement. I know that I belong to a controversial group, but I am still a human with hopes and dreams and ideas.” responding with “Shut up. You are a stupid [misogynist/misandrist] and you obviously hate [women/men].” does not make you the better person. It make you the worse one and a bully. Because at the end of the day, you are attempting to shame a person into doing what you see is right. And that is not cool.
